Multiple studies have shown that only 10-20 percent of adults who think they are allergic to penicillin truly have an allergy. As a result, instead of being treated with penicillin, they usually end up being prescribed a broad-spectrum antibiotic that’s more expensive, may have more side effects, and be less effective.
